In Japan, wood is used for facades, which has been carbonated for centuries. The method for the wood is called yakisugi and it also comes to Germany more and more. After all, the charred wood not only has an interesting look, but it is also ecological and very durable. The wood refinement by charcoal always sounds unbelievable at first, but it is an ancient method. The method should then make the wood really much more durable. The processing of wood is more widespread in Japan than in Germany. The method is referred to there as Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi. However, more and more manufacturers are also using carbonated wood in Germany.
What is yakisugi to consider?
The surface of the wood is charred at Yakisugi and this method is one of the oldest protective measures for wood. Wood has also been charred in antiquity to make it more durable. This was demonstrated, for example, by the pile buildings or the excavations in Pompeii. The Vikings and Slavs already used fire to make wood more resistant to the boats and also to the buildings. Some farmers also char the pasture piles before entering the earth. Yakisugi as a method for the carbonization of wood has been widespread in Japan since the 18th century. Only the Sugi wood is traditionally used in Japan. The Sugi wood is a Japanese cedar. The word yaki stands for charred or grilled, so yakisugi stands for charred cedar. With the special charring method, the wood has the unmistakable appearance and longevity becomes great.
Important information for Yakisugi
In the meantime, there are many buildings with carbonated wood facades also in Germany. Some architects work with the special wood. In Germany, however, it is often important to note that not only cedar is used. Depending on the depth of the combustion and type of wood, many interesting surfaces can be created. The wood gets the special grain and also the fiber structures are highlighted. The facades with the burnt wood stand out strongly from the normal facades. With the charcoal, the cells can be compacted in wood and the wood becomes resistant. This is important for weathering, rotting, insects, water and also for mould. The actual fire damage thus becomes an optimal protection for an outdoor area. The wood therefore hardly needs to be treated with the chemical, toxic wood preservatives. Non-preventive care with the re-oiling of the wood is required and care is only needed if the paint is to remain the same over the years.
